Katerina Alavedra-Duchoslav

The evocative cityscape paintings of KATEŘINA Alavedra-Duchoslav are tinged with the nostalgia and longing sparked by the dramatic displacement that characterized her childhood when her family had to move from Prague to Switzerland for political reasons. To this day her first home remains the subject of her paintings. Strong geometric forms ground each urban view, evoking at once Expressionism, Cubism and the artists of the Vienna Secession.
 
Alavedra-Duchoslav applies her acrylic paints with a sponge, an unusual process that makes her forms’ contours slightly diffuse, like the almost-remembered details of distant memories. She likens her system of layering — whereby she begins with dark tones and builds up towards brighter hues — to her life’s trajectory from fear towards fulfillment. That unique style of application creates dramatic lighting effects that emphasize the twisting streets and exquisite architecture of her first hometown. Each beautiful composition’s subtly tweaked symmetry gently guides the viewer's eyes down alleys and over rooftops, through a city of recollections. 		Katerina Alavedra-Duchoslav
