Creating has always been a very important aspect of my life; allowing me to fully express myself. As a chemist, my research always began from a creative concept and creativity in the arts has allowed me to transform my reality into a world in which I can express my inner emotions through the abstraction of objects, landscapes, and portraits. The aesthetic of my work is grounded in both the chromatic and tonal contrasts I create within my compositions, as well as my exploration of light and shadow. I believe that my goal as an artist is to show the beauty in life and how each of our individual realities can be imagined and transformed at will. I am most inspired by the Impressionist and Fauvist movements, as well as the vivid colors of Bolivian fabrics used by street dancers, and the colors of the Andean landscape.
My most recent inspiration has been Chinese Art, after learning techniques employed by traditional Chinese artists, including painting using black ink and watercolors. In incorporating that into my work, I have tried to immerse myself in Chinese culture, from practicing tai chi, to adopting a new signature with my Chinese name, Ma Tin Yu, in Chinese calligraphy. I have painted several Chinese pictures, which I will be presenting in New York this year.
