From Calcutta to Los Angeles and finally, Santiago, I have spent most of my life in urban environments. Despite the vast distances and cultural differences, all three cities are lands plastered in concrete overcast with the perpetual yellow-gray of smog. As a child, I suffered from lung disease and the occasional retreat into nature would breathe new life into me, which is still true today, as an adult. I find comfort and strength in the sturdy tree trunks, joy in rushing rivers, peace in the rustling of trees in the wind, vitality in the flash and clash of thunderstorms.
Through art, I immortalize a moment in nature; whether it be the droplets of water resting on the waxy surface of a leaf or the vastness of a forest landscape viewed from atop a hill. The challenge is in capturing the diverse patterns and textures in paint, and I rise to it using a variety of brush shapes and sizes and different techniques ranging from pointillism to impressionism to careful blending. I love the wide range of colors I can use when painting landscapes and plants, and I’m especially fond of using purples and dark blues for shadows. However I approach a painting, it always requires patience and a willingness to learn, and I feel that I have grown by the end of each project. In this way, I can soothe my own soul and hopefully, the souls of those who see my artwork.
