I was raised in a liberal household and went on to study, live and work in Cape Town. However, I ended up marrying into a conservative Afrikaans farming family, who made it clear that my role should be that of the supportive wife. It took years of hard work to regain confidence and faith in my capabilities, and rediscover my self-worth. Art was my anchor for me through it all; my way to express myself and my journey. Unfortunately my story is the same as so many other women. For that reason most of my art revolves around females and their plea for recognition and equality.
I work more and more in mixed media, for I find it best expresses the flow and depth I want to create. The merging or different materials and textures become symbols of life, its hardships and its lessons, and the journey of growing through it to emerge a vibrant and powerful woman.
