Chinemerem Omeh

As an artist, I understand that humans ascribe things they do not understand to evil. In a small community in Warri, the southeastern part of Nigeria, a boy was beaten for having a female reproductive organ. A natural phenomenon that happened to him, which he had no choice or control over. Yet, amidst his own confusion, fears, uncertainty, self-doubts, and questions, he was crucified and labeled evil by his society. Ignorance and intolerance become reasons and tools for oppression.

Through empathy as well as an open mind, I aim to raise awareness about those who do not neatly fit into the male or female sex, using heavy and rough applications of dead caked color to create tension, while utilizing earth cracks as hope. All in a bid to rid off any acts of inhumane treatment and start a much-needed conversation about this topic.
