W.M. Vinci

W.M. Vinci’s paintings are spectacularly layered and choreographed abstract compositions of color and light that seem to leap across each canvas with brimming, weightless energy. The well-traveled Northern Californian artist cites sources as disparate as archaeological renderings and volcanic calderas as inspirations for his palette of warm yellows, oranges and reds paired with fresh greens and blues, and the sense of dynamism and volatility that he injects into his works by combining acrylics, gels, glass, rock and other materials. Vinci maintains: “Abstract art isn’t intended to answer the questions — it asks them.” His works attest to a relentlessly inquisitive aesthetic sensibility.

Each canvas abounds with drip-like paint daubs, broad and thick brushstrokes, flowing swaths of color, sharp geometric forms, thin markings reminiscent of writing, and often text or additional media like sand or metal. With this versatile toolbox of visual elements and strategies Vinci crafts works that possess both dramatic movements and superb formal balance and poise.
