Vali Kolotourou

The human figure and form, with its diversity of gestures and emotions, is Greek painter Vali Kolotourou’s primary subject and theme. Working on oil and linen, Kolotourou’s works are imbued with a fleeting, poetic sense of the human body in time, place and circumstance. Thick yet translucent bands of color cascade through her compositions, hues smoothly but roughly applied in broad, expressive strokes. Influenced by German Expressionist painters such as Emile Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka, the artist applies her paints in quick, purposeful and vivaciously animated strokes of articulate, spirited color. Though highly expressive and dramatic, these paintings communicate a vivid silence, a stoic peace that speaks to the veracity of human nature. “Through my paintings I try to capture the internal density of human feeling and the spirituality of human being,” explains Kolotourou. “In this sense my work is an intimate study of silence and of human truth.” Through her work, the artist uses the human figure to speak of a vivid reality.

Extensively trained, Vali Kolotourou has received wide critical acclaim in her native Greece. She lives and works in Brussels.
