Ucki Kossdorff
Exploring a sense of balance between solidity and line, each movement is carefully considered in Austrian artist Ucki Kossdorff’s figural sculptures. As she infuses her figures with the chosen form, they become a visual representation of the act of thought, and she sometimes spends months developing a single work as each aspect is examined and defined. The artist works within the bounds of light and shadow, using bronze with patina and neutral toned stoneware created through a Japanese raku smoke firing technique, occasionally painted in brilliant colors. Kossdorff moves fluidly between styles and techniques, from abstract, compacted bodies which seem to be emerging from within a block of quarried stone, to pillar-like female forms, to more realistically rendered figures at rest.
Born in Gmunden, Austria, Kossdorff began her studies at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, later training in classical sculpture and ceramics with master artists in Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, and New York. Her works have received widespread recognition in recent years, appearing in exhibits, publications, and public and private collections throughout Europe and the United States.
