Tsutomu Hoshitani

Hidden meanings seem to emerge from within the imagery of the natural world that appears throughout Tsutomu Hoshitani’s creations, giving his works a mysterious presence. Flowers in bloom become visions of eruptions, while in the sharp swirls and bubbling, fluid spheres of Hoshitani’s gold and green abstractions one finds suggestions of unchecked growth and the remnants of tidal flows upon the earth. As he works, Hoshitani moves fluidly between oil paints on canvas and sumi ink and Japanese calligraphy on paper, using the traditional methods of his culture to address contemporary life. Through his paintings he strives to represent the issues and realities that face humanity in the modern world.

The catastrophic earthquake and tsunami of 2011 left an indelible mark on Hoshitani’s art, fueling him to express a staunch opposition to the continued use of nuclear power. Tsutomu Hoshitani graduated from Musashino Art University and has exhibited widely within his native Japan.
