Thierry Fazian’s immensely powerful artworks at once draw the viewer into their mysterious world – a mixture of allegory and mysticism, human and machine, familiar and alien. Using various mixed media, 3D forms are incorporated into the flat surface of the wood, built up, painted over to form the intricate layers of his compositions. These are unlike the classical relief, but are truly a hybridization of painting and sculpture. Fazian’s brushwork is exquisite, delicate and textured, imbuing the colored surfaces with a lightness that makes them appear luminous, almost floating. From this haze, figures and faces appear, drawing us into direct dialogue, to confront our own feelings of identity, humanity and existence.
Thierry Fazian’s style is unique, an arresting and thought-provoking combination which reflects the diversity of his cultural heritage and that of the Caribbean as a major crossroads for cultural exchange. Fazian is the vanguard of a philosophy that rejects cultural obscurantism, and acts to express energy and joy.
