Sung Ki Jeon

With a striking sensitivity, Korean artist Sung Ki Jeon paints the cultural iconography of his homeland with a vivid realism. Accented by abstract forms, Sung Ki contrasts the perfection of flowers erupting in bloom and the textural richness of earthenware vessels with an atmospheric fluidity. As he combines watercolors with natural pigments like coffee on watercolor paper, he discovers new worlds in paint. “The main concept of my work and my life is dominated by the signs of life and public solitude, Korean sentiment rooted in reality and in the background through a modern interpretation,” the artist explains. The result is an appealing and ingenious combination of traditional watercolor techniques with new materials that allow the artist to develop his own artistic identity.

Over the past thirty years Sung Ki Jeon has received widespread recognition for his exquisite skill and uniquely innovative methods in watercolors, including being chosen by the Korean Art Association as one of the five most influential watercolor painters in Korea.
