Stefania Buccio Gonzato

Stefania Buccio Gonzato’s saturated and somewhat stylized portraits depict a world full of beauty free of idealization. The Italian painter works in both oil and mixed media to coax the brightest spark out of her compositions, chasing the sun in each portrait. The subjects are closely cropped with all the hue and light radiating from the colors upon their body: skin, clothing, and hair become centers of life and energy. Their attitudes are relaxed, but Gonzato’s women are always commanding.

Gonzato rejuvenates the vocabulary of plein air upper class portraiture that we’ve long been familiar with in a way that is captivating both for itself and for the artistic potential it contains. The subjects are shown interacting with each other and in pursuit of refined activities. These are women by a woman, with complete inner lives. Gonzato roots it all in the basic color and line scheme. “My work wants to tell the life,” she explains. “When painting I feel a strong vibration and the need to tell something.” 		Stefania Buccio Gonzato
