Award-winning artist Soojin Hong takes her painting very personally. Her work is a veritable extension of her self. Her vivacious abstract paintings pour out spontaneously, becoming relics of her consciousness. Her natural ability for color is clear. Deep crimson, rose petal pink, hunter orange, and vivid ultramarine forcefully demand the attention of our eyes and appeal to our souls. Hong is at her best when she is working the surface of the canvas, playfully scratching, daubing and smearing the surface with the utmost gusto. This wonderfully expressive surface treatment provides a sense of rhythm and harmony for each piece. The artist has a musical background, which accounts for the overarching symphonic aesthetic that she has cultivated. Through Hong’s art we can peer into her creative process and even her spirit, as each motion, large or small, is recorded as part of the complete composition. “Artworks are more than just artworks to me,” she explains “because my whole life is melted in them.”
Soojin Hong lives and works in Seoul.
