Soco Freire’s acrylic and mixed media works on canvas feature loose, painterly abstraction and patches of rosy atmospheric void. Influenced by her father, Pedro Torres Martins, a graphic designer, Freire applies principles of design to traditional painting, experimenting with sponges, paint tubes and texturing tools in “Live Paintings” which she produces during public events. Celebrating exhibitionism and live action as the artist’s primordial creative force, Freire’s hypnotic compositions peel away at the edge of abstraction and representation. Utilizing a wide array of media to achieve a topographical image - gesso, molding gel, glue, newspaper, magazine, natural stones, sea shells and other materials – Freire’s emphasis on color achieves an abundant sense of emotionality and a startling dynamism concurrent with the performative aspects of her creative work.
Soco Freire was born in Joao Pessoa, Paraiba, Brazil and considers the ocean a profound source of inspiration. The artist currently lives and works in Orlando, Florida.
