Sharon Brill
Israeli-born sculptor Sharon Brill works reductively to create her evocative porcelain objects. Working on a pottery wheel, Brill’s process is archaeological. After creating a stratified piece, she removes the outer layers, carefully cracking through the surface, digging to reveal the core object. Combining an intuitive process with a restrained aesthetic, this work speaks of a balance between two poles. At the start of a piece, the artist ignores critical thinking, giving in to an expressive work flow. Towards the end of the process, however, she works meticulously, searching for the final object through an action she describes as “Sisyphean filing.” Having grown up near the Mediterranean shore, Brill is inspired by the ocean. She states: “The natural seashore, ceaselessly changing, always provides me with joyful and exciting surprises... The connection between the light, the air, the water and the sand, the shapes, the texture, the colors, shades and sounds are part of the language expressed in my creative work.”
Born in Israel, Sharon Brill now lives in Glenmont, New York.
