Rodolfo Cuesta

The oil and mixed media work of Rodolfo Cuesta is deeply personal, for the viewer as well as the artist. The painter’s thoughtful, highly detailed canvases place the human figure in a realm of surrealism, one that is starker than that associated with Ernst and Matta. Cuesta strips and dampens his landscape, leaving the intricate deconstruction and symbolism to manifest itself in his human subjects.

Cuesta is equally fascinated by timeless matters and by current events, and he treats all of his subjects with the same insightful patience, arranging each work with careful consideration and care. He reacts both to conceptual ideas, to which he gives a powerful and unusual form, and to the public and private occurrences that define his experience of the world. The results are sometimes disquieting, perhaps, but then the artist’s mission to “look into our inner soul, to force us to trespass the limits of art and go deeper into the complex world of reflection and philosophy” is no lightweight task.
