Reminiscent in texture, color palette and line to modern masters such as Pablo Picasso or Marc Chagall, Mexican painter Paloma Bernaldo de Quirós delves into the meaning of time and existence. A rustic radiance pervades these works, speaking to themes of innocence, joy and the meaning of life. Color, nuanced in rich, refined earthly tones, splashes through Bernaldo de Quirós’ canvases, speaking to the continual renewal of life and the human experience. Texture is at once intensely subtle and strongly powerful, spirited in vivid gradations. Rigorously fresh yet imbued with a sense of timelessness, the works are evocative of ancient cave paintings. “My encounter with rupestre (cave) painting greatly moved me and left a permanent imprint upon my life; it made me reconsider the origin of the human being, admire the beauty of the few elements used during those times and the form in which they embodied their experiences and their culture,” says Bernaldo de Quirós. Alive in form and technique, these works speak to the mutable, regenerative qualities of life.
Paloma Bernaldo de Quirós lives and works in Queretaro, Mexico.
