For me, painting is what’s important, and that has been true of me ever since I was a child. I love making paintings that create an atmosphere in which the viewer’s eyes are continuously moving around. My technique is very relaxed and meditative. My state of mind and how I feel emotionally contribute greatly to the work itself, how it comes together, and how long it takes. Sometimes I am able to visualize an entire painting before it has even been started... In other situations, it takes me weeks and sometimes even months to complete a piece - because I draw my inspiration from 'out of the blue.' The great thing about the end result is that it is able to speak for itself, tell a story, communicate something to the viewer.
I am inspired by artists such as Van Gogh, Salvador Dali, and Monet. Music is a constant influence: When I'm trying to portray a serious motion in my work, I listen to serious music; when I want to portray an angelic feeling, I listen to happy music.
The portrayal of time moving forward is always a challenge for me. I used to use objects such as clocks, for their symbolic value, but more recently I've been making some real breakthroughs with this – it’s something to watch out for in my work!
