Nietta d'Atena
Earthy; powerful; wondrous. There are many adjectives to describe the mesmerizing artwork of Nietta d'Atena, but none quite suffice to describe the beauty and mystery that she captures in her sculptures and paintings. Working in bronze, terra cotta, wood, glass, sand and oil paint, there seem to be few mediums that d’Atena is not capable of mastering.
Elegant dancers, sensual figures, animals, and abstract configurations all appear in her oeuvre. Yet there are definite qualities that connect her body of art. Each piece is infused with a sense of flux. Dramatic curves, lines, and shapes are prevalent. This is no coincidence, since she grew up in the Italian seaside town of Reggio Calabria. “I love the sea to the point of saying that no blood flows in my veins, but sea water,” she admits. Likewise, a woman’s hair or the cape of a knight riding a horse takes on the fluidity of moving water, succinctly merging humanity with the natural world. There is a distinct joie de vivre that defines Nietta d’Atena as an artist, and it is most certainly contagious.
