Nicole Kallenberg

I am a Texas-born painter inspired by great masters such as Caravaggio and Renoir. My portraits are dramatic, and created using techniques on the crossroad between Impressionism and Realism. In particular, I implement tenebrism, a technique originally created by Caravaggio, which focuses on a dramatic shift from dark to light. Yet where the old masters based their subjects in sober colors, I fall back on my Tex-Mex roots and ground my paintings in bright colors such as purple, red, blue and yellow. This results in provocative, emotional paintings portraying not just people, but stories that unfold in front of the viewer's eyes. Visual storytelling is something I strive for in my work. The old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words” is an idea that has cemented itself in my creative thought. Through the use of oil paint, a brush and canvas, communication can ensue.
