Michelle Chu

It is clear as soon as you come into contact with the work of Michelle Chu that the artist digs deep into her inner child to respond to external inspirations and represent that truth she has discovered within. Yet her brushstrokes are fully mature and compelling, while her textured backgrounds reveal uncanny detail and vivacity. The figures which populate the works are archetypes for an Eastern-Western mélange which the artist’s own background exemplifies. In all of her creations, Chu strives to present strength in the vulnerable and to reveal the underlying weaknesses of the seemingly infallible. She endows the most primal aspects of human nature with a level of worth that is fleeting yet palpable. The result is a collection of canvases that are colorful and alluring, presenting both human angst and joy concomitantly.

Michelle Chu recognizes her artistic experience as paralleling her own mixed background, and seeks an identity via her paintings, welcoming the viewer on her journey. Having studied art in Texas, the artist is currently based in New Jersey.
