Margaretha Gubernale’s fluid, ethereal portraits achieve a shimmering fluidity and spacious divinity rarely achieved in oil on canvas. Her uniquely developed form of mystical celestialism draws from elements in nature, mythology, new age spiritualism, philosophy and anthroposophy. Interested in symbolism as a veritable ‘staircase to the Universe,’ Gubernale’s works portray tempting, fleeting glimpses into the elevated realm of the divine cosmos which encourage the viewer to look deeply into both the works before them and the world beyond. The artist approaches the four elements as a creative visual language: intellect as air, fire as self-confidence and will, water as feeling, and earth as material execution through symbolism reaching up to Akasha, the Sanskrit word meaning ‘ether.’ Playing gracefully with archetypal symbols, formal amalgamations and allegorical language, Gubernale achieves a level of infinity and intricacy that defies language, lore and art as we know it.
Born in Zug, Switzerland, Margaretha Gubernale currently resides in Zug and Sicily. She has exhibited extensively in prestigious venues throughout Europe and abroad.
