Marc Laberge

Phantom-like shapes and figures float through Canadian artist Marc Laberge’s paintings, haunting and enthralling. Working with burnt wood, Laberge marks his canvases with ethereal, ashen lines which articulate the composition’s spiritual core. He uses basic black and white tones to flesh out his works, amplifying the palpable, essential integrity of his compositions. The artist is continuously enchanted and excited by the prospect of discovering realms and whimsical worlds beyond this one through his paintings. “The most fascinating thing about painting is the impression of being in front of a universe without limit,” explains Laberge. “It’s a game of discovery, a materialization of the invisible, an archeology of the spirit and the human soul.”

Human emotions are a thematic basis for these works, which both reflect and evoke the best and most fascinating of what humanity has to offer. In his works, Laberge pays homage to the great masters of the past, yet initiates a rich artistic tradition all his own.
