Leigh Gusterson

Leigh Gusterson’s brilliantly colored landscapes express all the joy and freedom she finds in her unique way of life, living and working in a remote mountain village in northern New Mexico. Merging abstract elements of contrasting shapes and colors with representational depictions, her paintings explore the juxtaposition of wild places and human residence, providing a reconfigured vision of the controlled, manicured structure of suburban life. Her subject matter is accentuated by swaying lines and forms, which lend a sense of movement to each composition.

Gusterson works outdoors on location, painting free-flowing landscapes peppered with Hispanic villages and settlements, and highlighted by crumbling adobes, old trucks, and farm and work animals. These images are borne of a lifelong personal search for freedom, and her art has come to express “that joy and freedom of this simple, direct, authentic, grounded, down-to-earth way of life, through color, loose brushstrokes, and the subject matter itself.” Here she reminds us of the beauty of the natural world and the simple pleasure of being alive.
