Korean artist Kunshik Shin combines traditional Eastern art forms with a modern Western painting style to create bold images infused with color, texture, and a strong use of line. Colors are vibrant and full of light, and are made all the more vivid by bold brushstrokes and textural depth. Both his urban and natural landscapes are defined by smooth, strong lines, which add to the intensity of the effect.
Although Shin currently lives and works in New York City, he draws much of his inspiration from his native Korea: both its beautiful landscapes and its rich artistic and cultural traditions. These cross-cultural influences are reflected in his unique style. Using the very traditional medium of watercolor on Korean rice paper, he then employs Western techniques, including a departure from natural colors into more intense hues through chromatic analysis and reinforcement, giving his images a more digital look. In combining the traditional with the contemporary, Shin invites his viewers to experience the world around them in a completely new way.
