Klaus Boesch (The Sandman)

Natural forces of gravity, currents, and time determine the changing form of each work in Austrian artist Klaus Boesch’s moving ‘Sand-Art’ series. Known as ‘The Sandman’, Boesch’s elemental and ephemeral creations show the effects of erosion and temporal shift as shifting layers of sediment are created by his colored sands. Landscapes emerge as mountains, valleys, and dunes ebb and flow within the piece only to dissolve and change as the work is turned once more. These interactive creations invite the viewer to turn the piece and set the sand into swirls of motion. Complex compositions resembling collage and sculpture include embedded Sandpictures, telling stories about our ever-changing world. Enticingly soothing to watch, Boesch’s work explores themes of wisdom, money, love and nature. His present reflections of urban life and pace have resulted in titles like TV Stevie, Tower and Road Trip.

Though his techniques have been known since the 1960’s, today Klaus Boesch is the only artist to be known for using this unique method. The art world is richer for his efforts. 		Klaus Boesch (The Sandman)
