Inspired by the textures around him and by notable painters of the recent past such as Kandinsky, Kevin Stevens paints non-object-oriented works of art with multiple transparent layers of acrylic paint. He uses a combination of Shoji paper and found objects on plywood to create textures that give shape to his work, and the excitement of texture and mixed media gives his art a cohesive sense of tension. Stevens' use of soft colors contrasts with the repetition of bold geometric shapes, and the combination of the two lends a dreamlike effect to his work. "I am trying to convey a sense of space through the use of color, texture, transparencies and planes," he writes. His art exhibits a high level of craftsmanship and visual appeal, subtly conveying moods, shifting atmospheres, and rhythms.
Encouraged by his mentor, Kevin Stevens moved from Boston to Gloucester, Massachusetts and became a member of the Rockport Art Association. He has been painting and exhibiting ever since.
