Hung Yi

The Taiwanese sculptor and painter Hung Yi works in a playful, hybrid style full of bright, Pop art hues, cartoonish figures and traditional motifs, patterns and lettering. His acrylic compositions and sleek, painted stainless steel forms evoke contemporary satirists like Takashi Murakami and Tom Otterness, matched with the ebullience of Nikki De Saint Phalle’s deliriously colorful sculptures. Hung’s seemingly upbeat characters are similarly duplicitous, often with individual figures sporting multiple eyes and mouths, or doubled in reflections, making them at once winking and snarling, smiling and preparing to bite.

Their two-sided character reflects their formal properties, which combine extremely complex fabrication processes and a contemporary palette with iconography, detailing and imagery that evoke primitive art and traditional ornamentation with hints of more recent visual culture. The creatures born from Hung’s confluence of interests, allusions and evocations are at once friendly and threatening, otherworldly and familiar, contemporary but with ancient ancestry. They are survivors in a contemporary art environment constantly feeding off its past to nurture its future.
