Chinese-American artist Gabe Tong was born with multiple eye defects that should have prevented him from seeing, but this could not deter the resolute passion of a painter with a vision to share, and today he creates remarkable, inspiring works of art. Combining bright colors with unusual textures, he has developed a unique art form that he terms 3D cubism, a forum for “the freedom of expression without the limitation of any boundary of definitive lines or figures.”
Tong’s 3D cubist works blend geometric design with a unique use of color, where thick directional lines and bulky layers of paint combine to create sculptural vistas right on the canvas. Figures are not limited by traditional forms; rather, various elements intermingle amid layers of texture and color, creating a depth of perception that adds volume and dimension to the overall effect. What results is a visual montage, where recognizable forms are re-contextualized, allowing the viewer to experience their beauty as if for the first time.
