Whether painting in the studio or en plein air, my initial reaction to a subject is usually the source of my inspiration. When a particular scene grabs me, I “know” it must be painted. Although I am a representational artist, I have come to be comfortable and confident in allowing the scene to tell me how realistic or abstract my interpretation will be. If there is an obvious story to tell or merely a magical momentary encounter to communicate, what I see before me is what I paint. For me, that is the very definition of art. Although I enjoy a periodic foray in acrylic on canvas, I love the unexpected, “happy accidents” and the challenges that watercolor presents. Whether in selecting the scene or my approach, I enjoy NOT being in control.
