David Segeta’s figurative acrylic on canvas creations deal with imperceptible realities and metaphysical absence. His translucent subjects reflect the fluid, dynamic uncertainty of the body and bodily instincts. Deeply emotional and packed with graduated layers of smooth, opalescent hues, these characteristically bare bodily forms express at once the basic structure of humanity and the mysterious signature of corporeality. Absence of adornment and decoration is key to the ethereal charm which the images possess.
Segeta explores the notion of ‘double life’ in terms of metaphysical inhabitation and neutral space. Inspired by his experiences growing up during the Czech Republic’s Velvet Revolution and the subsequent collapse of Communism there, as well as by his personal experimentation with Eastern Spirituality, Segeta’s figures possess a peaceful composure and abundant weightlessness. His subjects – sallow, bound, surrendered, icy white or aflame with brilliant coloration - are forever growing pale and disappearing right at the moment of structural continuity.
