Darryn Marshall

Darryn Marshall “paints” with wood and steel, melding the natural tones of wood with the modern sheen of steel in low-relief sculptures that present viewers with a vision of organic geometry that combines two worlds. His craftsmanship is superb; he hand-selects pieces of timber for their grain, and carefully balances positive and negative space to achieve dramatic effect. “Through simplification and reworking various designs and mark making, I have been able to connect the past with the present in somewhat of a metamorphosis,” he explains.

Marshall is interested in exploring the dichotomy that exists between then and now. He composes his work strategically, placing each wooden component onto its stainless steel backing with the knowledge that different viewpoints will create a different impression, leading to an intriguing, changeable composition. Each piece exhibits a sense of calm and serenity. Marshall was born in New Zealand, and traditional Maori culture has profoundly influenced his work and his perception. He currently lives in New Jersey, and he has exhibited his art in countless shows.
