There is a tension in Chad Redl's paintings between the abstract and the representational, a balance of enigmatic imagery which speaks to us on a level beyond language and which gives his work its power as well as its accessibility. Often presenting masses of people in what could be spiritual gatherings or even another universe, his spontaneous, fragile shapes are often juxtaposed against strong backgrounds of deep blue or fiery red. Chad also combines a bright, bold and intense color palate with primary shapes, so as to create a dynamic that makes his canvases vivacious as well as engaging. The contexts and subject matter might appear alien, yet they work on a primal level, through conceptual patterns of universal forms. Chad relies on his viewers to make their own associations, and thus become fully engaged with the work. Through the experience of insight, association or revelation, the quiet power of these moving and provocative paintings is revealed.
