Cauro Hige

Cauro Hige’s acrylic on wood panel paintings are an investigation of gender, identity and the tropes of masculinity as they appear in the Eastern and Western worlds. Having majored in Psychology before turning to the arts in his late thirties, Hige exploits the subject matter of gender as a psychosexual chimera. Rooted in a traditionally Japanese sensibility, the artist imbues manhood with the soft qualities of nature and the ephemeral. Foliage, butterflies and baby animals appear in the frame along with graphic depictions of the male body. Sentiments of longing, melancholy, pride and exhibitionism are invoked from a dynamically Pop and Transcendentalist perspective. Naming Hopper, Erte and the renowned Japanese realist painter Jakuchu as influences, Hige is an artist exploring the graphic, tender and fruitful territory at the borders of nation, continent, sex, gender and identity.

Cauro Hige has exhibited his work to acclaim in Los Angeles, Sydney, Spain and Tokyo.
