Antonia Sanker

The young German artist Antonia Sanker paints figurative, fantasy-like scenes in beautiful detail while sustaining an uncanny, melancholic mood. Her exquisitely evocative oil compositions often draw on personal experiences and childhood memories of American fairy tales. Solitary young girls and boys appear sad and suspicious of the world, while the adults seem equally untrusting and frequently melancholic. Sanker contrasts these lonely moments with phenomenal group paintings where figures are packed into immovable masses. Some scenes unfold in distorted, nostalgic locales, but more often the rigorously painted and organized crowd overwhelms the picture plane, becoming both subject and setting. These large canvases abound in characters and objects, affording viewers innumerable rich details to explore. Sanker assures her audience that despite chaotic appearances, these painted groups are carefully structured, like an enormous collage in which there is neither time nor place. In this respect her scenes resemble a dreamworld which the sleeper both desires to escape and is desperate to return to.

Currently splitting her time between Cologne and Düsseldorf, Antonia Sanker is soon to begin studies at Paris’s École des Beaux-Arts.
