The highly expressionistic oil paintings of English artist Andy Fullalove are at once recognizable landscapes and representational metaphors of emotional conditions as they transcend the shift between the figurative and the abstract. Initially, Fullalove starts with figurative landscapes and then moves beyond what lies before him to explore his inner thoughts and imaginations within the painting. Each of Fullalove’s paintings vibrates with intensity, as brilliant color schemes, bold brushwork, rich imagery, and edgy yet balanced compositions come together on the canvas.
A major theme running throughout Fullalove’s work is regeneration of the land, “the notion that civilizations have risen up through adversity alongside the constant force of nature” and the “scarred landscapes of inevitable contrasts” that have resulted. After surviving the intense emotional experience of being caught up in a bombing attack in northern England shortly before his wedding, he seeks to reconnect human struggles with those of the land and give new insight to us all. What results are images that afford a glimpse of previously unknown emotional complexities that straddle the human and natural worlds, and render us all one.
