“Art is to the soul what architecture is to civilization – its most significant expression,” remarks Canadian artist Alexandre-Éric Piette, whose mixed media works on canvas blur the boundaries of figuration and abstraction. Blooming neon formations in free form galactic motion are set against texturized and somber backdrops of navy, royal blue, maroon and crimson. Influenced by his interdisciplinary studies in dance, music and poetry, these delicate abstractions invoke hosts of associations, among them the oceanic, botanic, astronomical and nuclear. Each viewer will connect naturally with the aspect that is most pertinent to them. At home with color, texture and the subtle nuances of light and motion, Piette’s work records the luminosity and rhythm of the object at work in space.
Alexandre-Éric Piette has been a resident of Joliette for the past 18 years. In 2011 he was awarded the First Athena Prize by the International Academy of Fine Arts of Quebec in recognition of his artistic merit in the Visual Arts.
