New York painter Bruce Brand’s meditative paintings take on a life of their own. The forms on Brand’s canvases expand, constrict, eddy, and soothe, reflecting the unpredictable beauty of the natural world. Brand gives his materials unmediated autonomy, allowing his paints to physically embody the expansive, open quality of seascapes or land formations. Yet Brand’s work also embodies the vast mysteries of the spiritual realm. An artist who has studied meditation, yoga and music in India and Japan, Brand treasures personal reflection and inner journeys. His paintings explore the visual and emotional relationship between the inner and outer worlds: an expanse of blue could reflect a calm ocean, but it could also reflect a calm mind. If paintings can be meditative conduits through which life’s journeys take form, then Brand’s work channels a rich gamut of life experiences.
Brand received an MFA from University of Wisconsin. His work has since been exhibited widely and collected internationally. He currently lives and works in both New York City and South Beach Florida.
